Max Verstappen took a convincing win at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

The two McLaren drivers saw some late race drama however, as a mistake at Norris’ pit stop allowed Piastri to pass the Briton who had been ahead for the whole race prior.

The Australian was ordered to hand the position back by his team and he complied, allowing Norris to reduce his deficit to his teammate in the championship to 31 points.

Verstappen had to give up a place during the race too, having gained an advantage from going off track whilst defending from Norris on the first lap.

He swifty overcame this to reclaim first place, before setting a very solid and steady pace to pull away from the rest of the field.

The reigning world champion did not face any significant threat to his lead, before taking the chequered flag with a comfortable margin.

Speaking after the race, Verstappen said:

“It was a great day for us, we were flying and that the car for me was really enjoyable and I could manage the pace quite well throughout that first stint.

“We pitted at the right time and the hard tyres at the end you can push a bit more because they are more resilient.

“A fantastic execution by everyone and the whole team, I think the whole weekend we were on it and it’s super enjoyable to win here.”

Elsewhere, Charles Leclerc was the highest placed Ferrari on home soil, finishing in fourth place.

The Monegasque driver managed to get ahead of Piastri for third in the early stages, before eventually settling behind.

Mercedes’ George Russell finished fifth, while Lewis Hamilton managed to recover from a 5 place-grid penalty to finish in sixth place.

Gabriel Bortoleto was the best of the rookies, finishing an impressive eighth in his Sauber, while Isack Hadja grabbed the final point in tenth despite starting from pitlane.

Most of the post-race discussion will inevitably focus on McLaren’s decision to swap their drivers, but both were coy when asked about the matter post-race.

When asked about the incident, Norris said:

“I felt like I was there (the pit stop) for quite a long time. Every now and then we make mistakes as a team and this was one of them.

“I did everything I could today, I couldn’t do a lot more. I tried to fight against Max. We had a good race but he came out on top.

“I just need to keep doing what I’m doing.”
